Volunteers

Volunteers are always needed in the museum’s activities. We will provide orientation and training.

Please consider the following as suggestions only. We prefer to work with you to create a position based on your interests and background. If you would like to do something not listed here, please let us know. If you wish, you may download our volunteer application form.  Fill it out and bring it to the museum, and you will be able to discuss your plans in more detail with our staff.

Greeters

A greeter welcomes visitors, assists with gift shop purchases (training provided), provides general visitor information, and can answer general exhibit questions.  This is a great position for someone who likes a good chit chat and also an opportunity to get some reading done or assist the museum with other miscellaneous projects.  Shifts are usually 2-3 hours but we are flexible!

Cleaning

If you are detail-oriented, meticulous, and have an interest in conservation, we have artifacts in our collection to keep you busy.  And we always have the basics to keep up on: Vacuuming, dusting, wiping down the glass cabinets, and the occasional wood polishing.

Oral Histories

This is an interesting project for someone who can work independently and transcribe via computer (MS Word).  We will provide headphones, a computer station and a style manual. Each tapes subject matter will also be notated in a searchable index.

Computer/Design/Data entry

We are looking for people who can help with our newsletter, provide photos and descriptions of events and projects for our website, work on keeping our various indexes up to date and help with general office work. Tutorials provided.

Research

This includes doing research on individual artifacts or photographs, or researching the development of individual communities along the coast.  Research involves consulting local history books, our database, gift forms, newspapers, archives, oral histories and human resources (interviews).

Events

Throughout the year the museum hosts or takes part in a variety of events.  Depending on which event, we are looking for people to do baking, staff the gift shop, assist with tours, deliver posters and do prep work/setup/cleanup.  If you like working with children we can add you to our list of helpers for children's activities and Heritage Play Day.

Maintenance/Work Parties

Whether its working on refurbishing boats, building maintenance, or moving display cases and large heavy artifacts, from time to time we need assistance in the form of carpentry, painting, or simply a strong back.

Garden

The museum’s entryway is in constant need of upkeep: Weeding, watering, trimming, and occasionally adding new plants.
